Man Utd eyeing €75m Portugal star as first signing of the summer

Manchester United are already making plans for this summer’s transfer window, according to reports. Erik ten Hag has overseen a period of sizeable spending and if reports are to be believed, that trend is set to continue this year.

The Dutchman signed as many as six players last summer, with another three players joining the club in the most recent January transfer window on loan.

Ten Hag identified a number of areas as positions of concern in his first transfer window, with the midfield being the department given the most attention. As a result, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were signed.

The goalkeeper department is one the club is reportedly looking at now, with David de Gea edging closer to the end of the four-year contract he signed in 2019.

The Spaniard is yet to sign a new deal and according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is now being targetted.

As per the report, Costa recently signed a new contract with the Portuguese giants and Porto have set a massive €75m price tag on the young star’s future.

SN’s verdict…
As things stand, it feels like United’s ability to spend big in the upcoming summer window will depend on whether the sale of the club is completed by then.

The Glazer family will be reluctant to sanction any sales if a sale has reached its final stages but with interest from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatar intensifying, supporters can be optimistic that it will be done in time.

De Gea recently reached the landmark of 400 Premier League appearances for the club, becoming the first shot-stopper to do so. Additionally, he equalled Peter Schmeichel’s record of 178 clean sheets.
