‘He’s a leader’ – Rio Ferdinand heaps praise on Manchester United centre-back

Former Red Rio Ferdinand has hailed Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez after his outstanding start to life in M16.

Martinez joined the Red Devils from Ajax in July 2022 for a fee of around £56 million and has since proven to be worth every penny.

The Argentinian had an instant impact on the squad and has been instrumental in Erik ten Hag’s project and resurgence at Old Trafford. He has formed one-half of one of the most dynamic centre-back partnerships in world football alongside Raphael Varane, with the pair becoming irreplaceable in the starting lineup.

The Theatre of Dreams has overseen 13 consecutive wins as of late, with United aiming to make it 14 tomorrow night, alluding to Ten Hag’s desire to make the home turf a “fortress” again. Martinez has been pivotal in this and in revitalising the Reds’ defensive unit, so much so that they have kept 16 clean sheets in all competitions this season so far. In comparison with last term, they kept just 10.

His passion in the shirt and attitude on the pitch has also seen him quickly build a strong connection with supporters, one that grows with every game.

Ferdinand on Martinez

Ferdinand has given his verdict on the 25-year-old, who became a World Cup champion last year in Qatar. He said on his FIVE YouTube channel: “On form right now, I don’t think there’s really much argument coming from anywhere else. I think he’s dominant, he’s aggressive, he’s a leader, he communicates well, he shows character, he’s there in big moments.”
