Manchester United duo make Premier League TOTW after win over Crystal Palace

BBC Sport columnist Garth Crooks has included Manchester United duo David de Gea and Marcus Rashford in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Manchester United go into Wednesday’s game against Leeds after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday. There was no way back for the visitors thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, although they did score after Casemiro’s red card which made for a nervy ending to the game.

Two players caught Crooks’ eye in the game and both were wearing the red of Manchester United.

David de Gea may have conceded a goal in the second half, but the Spaniard pulled off a terrific save to deny a close range header from Marc Guehi. The other player who impressed Crooks is Rashford, who took his tally for Premier League goals this season to 10.

“The save from Marc Guehi’s point-blank header was De Gea at his best,” Crooks wrote, as per BBC Sport. “With little more than 20 minutes left to play and United down to 10 men against Crystal Palace, after Casemiro had been sent off for violent conduct, the Spanish keeper kept his side’s hopes of winning alive. Such was the quality of the save, his team-mates were compelled to congratulate him. Recent media speculation suggests De Gea is close to signing a new contract at Old Trafford. If I were manager Erik ten Hag, I would make it my top priority.”

On Rashford, Crooks added: “It’s very hard not to recognise Manchester United’s transformation under Ten Hag without also acknowledging Rashford’s continued goalscoring exploits under the new regime. Rashford lost his form and focus last season and his game suffered as a consequence. However, with 19 goals since the arrival of Ten Hag, the England striker has recaptured his goalscoring prowess and put United on course for a top-four finish.

“What possessed referee Andre Marriner to send off Casemiro against Palace, for what appeared to be no more than a mere scuffle between players, I will never know. Based on the decision to dismiss United’s former Real Madrid midfielder, at least eight players from the melee should have followed the Brazilian into the dressing room.”

BBC Sport’s Premier League Team: De Gea; Aguerd, Tarkowski, Dawson; Emerson, Neves, Onana, Tete; Rashford, Kane, Mitoma.

United now go into a double-header against Leeds without key player Casemiro, who will also miss the visit of Leicester City. Former captain Gary Neville has advised the club not to appeal his three-match ban because that could result in a longer suspension.

Let us know in the comments section if you think United should appeal Casemiro’s red card.
