Harry Maguire didn’t want to leave Manchester United in January

It certainly feels like Harry Maguire’s days at Manchester United are numbered.

The club captain has found first-team minutes hard to come by under Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman transforming the defence thanks to the additions of players like Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro.

A number of players have improved, too, but Maguire has sat on the fringes of the squad all season. His new role in the squad doesn’t warrant the £200k-per-week he is paid either, so it may be time to reassess a few things.

According to reports, Maguire rejected a loan move away to Inter Milan in the final hours of Deadline Day, with his mind set on winning trophies between now and the end of the season.

United are in the Carabao Cup final but unless there’s a number of injuries, Maguire is unlikely to start against Newcastle at Wembley.

However, talkSPORT reporter Alex Cook recently claimed that Maguire could join Aston Villa in the summer.

Fellow journalist Dean Jones suggests that Maguire’s future “has to be a consideration” since he has fallen so far down the pecking order.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “I give him a lot of credit for the way he’s dealt with all the flak he’s taken. He’s shown such a strong mentality, that it can’t really get any worse no matter what he does next.

“I don’t think he wants to leave Man United. But I think, given the game time he’s been given since the World Cup, it has to be a consideration.”

Maguire suffered with illness after the World Cup and Ten Hag has already explained that he wasn’t always available for selection.

It seems some of this just goes completely over the head of certain journalists.
