Manchester United shortlist Inter Milan centre-back as possible transfer target

With another win chalked off in the FA Cup, it would be fair to say everything is going to plan for Manchester United under Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has started the process of rebuilding the squad and we can expect a few players to face the chop in the summer.

Harry Maguire is one player I don’t think will have a future at Manchester United. It would be a tall order for the England star to gain a regular role in the side ahead of the usual starters, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, as well as Luke Shaw.

Ultimately, Ten Hag doesn’t appear to trust Maguire like some of the other defenders he has at his disposal. That doesn’t cut the mustard for someone who plays every game for England — and he has continued to do that, despite losing his place in the United team.

United would welcome the exit of Maguire by securing a new central defender in the near future, with reports in Italy (cited by TEAMtalk), suggesting that they’ve made an approach to sign Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij.

De Vrij, who was initially linked with a move to Manchester United under Louis van Gaal, is the second Inter defender o be linked with a move to Old Trafford. The second being right-back Denzel Dumfries.

The Netherlands international has just six months left on his existing deal, with the 30-year-old ready to make a decision on his future next month.

De Vrij could well prove to be the Maguire upgrade that United need, having shone in Italy of late.
