Manchester United academy star Shola Shoretire has joined Bolton Wanderers on loan.
The aim for any young player like Shoretire heading out on loan in January is to gain first-team experience. He has been unable to do that at United after being named an unused substitute for three first-team matches this season, so it makes perfect sense for the club to push his development with a temporary move.
Speaking about his loan switch to Bolton, Shoretire said (via Daily Mail): ‘They played some very good football and similar to what we’ve played at United,’ Shoretire said. ‘After that game was only when I found out Bolton had some interest and I was delighted really because it’s a great opportunity.
‘Coming here at 18 I’m transitioning into the men’s game, which is exactly what I needed. Hopefully I will have a good loan here and it will put me in a good place.
‘For me the club belongs in the Premier League and hopefully next season the Championship.
Shoretire made Manchester United history when he broke Norman Whiteside’s record to become the youngest player to represent the Reds in European competition a year ago, but prior to that he made his debut against Newcastle and become the seventh youngest player to do so for the club.
It has been clear for some time that Shoretire is highly rated by those at Carrington. Only time will tell if his move to Bolton is a success, but we wish the best of luck.
One factor to remember is the younger players in the academy can at least have faith in the first-team manager to give them opportunities if they prove themselves. Just look at how Alejandro Garnacho has emerged as a first-team regular this season under Ten Hag – just a year after winning the FA Youth Cup.
