Predicted Manchester United XI vs Charlton – Garnacho & Martinez start Carabao Cup quarter-final

Manchester United host Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford this evening in a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie. Kick-off is at 8pm.

The competition provides a lucrative opportunity for the Red Devils to secure their first trophy in five years, as well as Erik ten Hag’s first piece of silverware as manager.

United have been drawn the easier route on paper, as their opponents are the only remaining team outside of the Premier League. Charlton compete in League One and are currently sitting in 12th place.

Team news

United are without vice-captain Bruno Fernandes and the 28-year-old will be sorely missed, as he always plays a key role at the heart of the midfield. He misses out due to suspension after picking up a yellow card in the previous match of the competition.

Donny van de Beek would likely have been next in line to replace the Reds’ No.8, however, he was forced off last week with an injury and will be sidelined for the side’s forthcoming fixtures.

Jack Butland, who joined United last week on a loan deal for the remainder of the season, may make his debut tonight to give David de Gea a rest.

Predicted line-up

It’s important to note that Saturday brings one of United’s most important games of the season – the Manchester derby. Both teams are in form heading into the match and given the current status of the top four, it’s a must-win for the Reds. A win can move United to within one point of their noisy neighbours in second place.

It will also significantly boost their position above Newcastle, as both sides are level on points but United boast a game in hand.

Tonight, the team should try and get the job done early as it’s likely Ten Hag will have included youngsters on the bench, however, they’re unlikely to be utilised unless the game looks wrapped up and qualification is secured.

Line-up:

Butland

Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Martinez, Malacia

Fred, McTominay

Antony, Eriksen, Garnacho

Martial
