Manchester United hope new Ronaldo rule can prevent dressing room jealousy

It’s no secret that Manchester United pay a premium for players whether it’s transfer fees or salaries, but something needs to be done about players earning significantly more than what they are actually worth.

According to the Daily Mail, a new ‘Ronaldo rule’ will be introduced to ensure nobody inside the Old Trafford dressing room feels inferior because of what their team-mates are earning. This could see salaries capped at £200,000-per-week with David de Gea the first player to be impacted.

The idea is to have more players paid at that level rather than splash out £500,000 a week on individual superstars – like Cristiano Ronaldo.

United freed up a bit of the wage money when Ronaldo’s contract was terminated ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, but it remains to be seen if United will find a striker to replace him in January.

De Gea currently earns £375,000-per-week which makes him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world. I don’t think I will upset anyone by saying he isn’t the best keeper in the world, so it’s about time this was addressed.

Ultimately, this is something Richard Arnold and John Murtough need to fix after watching Ed Woodward conduct bizarre deals year after year. Or those that replace them if / when we get new owners.

The report adds that De Gea has been offered a take it or leave it offer that is ‘far lower’ than his current deal.

However, this could prove to be problematic when United try agree new terms with Rashford because Paris Saint-Germain would be able to double his wages if his new deal at United was worth £200,000-per-week.

We already know the French champions are interested in signing Rashford.

Will Ten Hag bend the ‘Ronaldo rule’ for certain players? He doesn’t strike me as a manager who bends rules.
