Manchester United academy defender Charlie Wellens has returned to the club after joining Oldham Athletic on loan in September.
The 20-year-old agreed a four-month loan deal with the National League club, which ran until 8 January 2023 – but a decision has been made for the player to return to United ahead of schedule.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Wellens was not getting the game time United hoped he would, so they pulled the loan deal.
Wellens made just four starts for Oldham, playing a total of 319 minutes in the league this season, but he will be happy to be back on the pitch after featuring from the bench for United’s U21s against PSV on Monday.
Not every loan deal works out. United deserve credit for being pro-active rather than letting Wellens get overlooked at Oldham.
Now the club’s staff must make a decision on what they should do with Wellens next.
