Erik ten Hag may reignite pursuit of Frenkie de Jong next summer

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is still interested in signing Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.

Ten Hag spent the majority of the summer transfer window pursuing De Jong before ultimately failing to secure the Dutchman’s signature.

According to The Athletic and BBC, United will revisit the transfer saga at the end of the 2022/2023 campaign.

A prevailing issue in the talks was that De Jong did not want to leave Barcelona, especially to a club that would not be playing in the Champions League for the forthcoming season. Fast-forward to February 23, and he will likely be lining up against the Red Devils in a Europa League playoff tie at Old Trafford.

However,  Samuel Luckhurst confirmed that the 25-year-old had privately told Ten Hag he was open to joining United.

United’s midfield signings

Despite missing out on the Catalan player, United added Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to the squad and both have had an instant impact in their respective positions, as well as cemented their places in the starting lineup.

Both have shown their desire to play for the club and succeed in Manchester, which is the exact kind of attitude that should be required of every signing. Ten Hag should only approach De Jong again if the Netherlands international is keen on being part of his project and staying through the highs and lows.
