Victor Osimhen transfer fee could be a stumbling block for Manchester United

Victor Osimhen has been linked with a move to Manchester United for the best part of a year. Well, especially since it became clear that Cristiano Ronaldo wanted to leave the club, the Nigerian has never been far from speculation over a switch to Old Trafford.

The Manchester Evening News recently ran a report stating Osimhen is wanted by United. He has continued to show off his goalscoring prowess for Napoli this season, with 10 goals in 14 games in all competitions.

Napoli won’t be under any pressure to sell Osimhen in the summer and there is no chance they will let him go midway through the season. It wasn’t that long ago (2020) that the Italian club spent £64.6 million to sign him from Lille and he is a crucial part of their encouraging team.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has reported that Osimhen is ‘one of the top targets’ for United, but the transfer fee could prove to be a stumbling block. It has been suggested that they want approximately €100 million for his signature in the summer.

We must remember that Manchester United is currently up for sale. That makes it even more unlikely that the Glazers will suddenly decide to splash the cash. They’ve never done that — only ever leached from the club’s earnings and commercial power — and I don’t think Osimhen will be on the agenda until new owners are in place.

That’s one of the reasons I think Erik ten Hag has to hope for a takeover solution ahead of next season.

Osimhen would be a very good option for United. He’s getting better each year and his goal record this season speaks volumes.
