Man United take huge step to first January signing after reaching agreement

Manchester United could be active in the transfer market again this January as Erik ten Hag continues to revamp the squad he inherited from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this year.

Ten Hag oversaw a host of departures in his first summer and the Dutchman signed six new players, nearly all of which are first-team regulars now.

Antony, the former Ajax winger, became United’s biggest signing of the summer but there were also links to another Eredivisie star – Cody Gakpo.

A move for the PSV winger never materialised but after enjoying a stellar start to the season, and impressing in this winter’s World Cup, the rumour mill is back up and running.

If the latest reports are to be believed, it can be said that United have now taken a huge step towards sealing their first January signing and it would be a timely addition.

According to Football Insider, the Old Trafford club have reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with the Dutch sensation after keeping in touch with his representatives following last summer’s pursuit.

It’s claimed that United have now reached an agreement on player terms and now need to strike one with his club, PSV, who are managed by Reds hero Ruud van Nistelrooy.

In the report, it’s added that United are ‘well placed’ to win the race to sign Gakpo after a number of bids were rejected for him from other Premier League clubs.

SN’s verdict…
Gakpo has certainly taken Europe by storm over the last three months and there’s no denying that he would add immense quality to this United side, who are lacking options in the final third.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial departure will have alarmed Ten Hag and adding another attacker is paramount, especially since United are still competing in all four competitions.

There are also concerns over the fitness of some of United’s existing options. Anthony Martial, for example, has started just two league games.
