Raphael Varane set to start for France after recovering from hamstring injury

Raphael Varane has not played since October 22 against Chelsea and there were fears that the hamstring injury he sustained at Stamford Bridge 34 days ago would end his hopes of playing in the World Cup.

Varane was part of the France side that won the tournament in Russia four years ago and he remains one of the first names on Didier Deschamps’ teamsheet.

His involvement in their opening group game against Australia was almost definitely ruled out ahead of the tournament but he was fit enough to be named on the bench.

Now, the 29-year-old is set to complete his recovery from that injury to start against Denmark in what is a crucial game for both teams.

That’s according to French publication L’Equipe, who say that Varane is likely to be drafted back into the side after Ibrahima Konate deputised against Australia.

SN’s verdict…
Varane’s reaction to the injury at Chelsea had fans wearing the worst but amazingly, he has recovered quickly. Erik ten Hag will be anxiously waiting for his star defender to return to Carrington unscathed.

Hopefully, he is not being rushed back. Varane has a long history of hamstring injuries and that resulted in a personalised pre-season programme.
