Lionel Scaloni did not expect his Argentina side to start their World Cup campaign with a defeat to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi’s didn’t let them play as they would have liked, caught them with the offside trap countless times, and prevent Lionel Messi from causing too much damage.
Lisandro Martinez did not start but we can expect that to change for the next game, with Argentina needing to beat both Mexico and Poland to qualify for the knockout stages.
The Manchester United defender was introduced on the hour mark but he could not stop Argentina falling to a shock 2-1 loss. It’s the type of result that will go down in World Cup history because Scaloni’s men are among the favourites to win the competition outright.

Two goals after half-time saw the game turned on its head to overturn Lionel Messi’s first half penalty to record a historic win.
A terrible start for Argentina but Martinez was not at fault.
Next up it’s Denmark vs Tunisia… Eriksen vs Hannibal!
