Alan Shearer singles out Marcus Rashford for praise after England win

Alan Shearer hailed England for their World Cup opener win against Iran but praised one star in particular for his performance off the bench.

Marcus Rashford came on as a second half substitute and took only three touches to score his first goal at a World Cup as England started their Group B campaign with a 6-2 win against Iran.

It was a good evening for United’s three players representing England at the World Cup. On top of Rashford’s goal, both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw registered an assist each in the first-half as England held a 3-0 lead.

After full-time, Shearer praised Rashford as a player so many didn’t want involved in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad. He hailed the 25-year-old for making a difficult goal look simple.

He told BBC Sport, as quoted by The Express: “There was a lot of debate about whether he should have been in the squad; what an answer. It was fantastic play off Harry Kane, the way he brings that ball down and then puts it to him. Again, it looks effortless, he makes it look so easy, but it’s not.”

This should give Rashford a boost in confidence for the remainder of the competition.

On top of that, it’s his first goal at a major international tournament.

I don’t think it will be his last at this one!
