Wayne Rooney says he’d start Messi, bench Kane and drop Ronaldo

Wayne Rooney was again put in the spotlight during a recent appearance on Indian TV and has response to a question about Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane.

It has been an eventful week for Cristiano Ronaldo, who called his former teammate “a rat” during an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Rooney has already responded to these comments by calling them “strange”, but he backed up his view of Ronaldo, saying age catches up with every player in regards to his current struggles for form. He still managed to show his class by saying Ronaldo is up there with Messi as the two best players of all-time, so the former England captain was keen to show he meant no disrespect or had any intention of getting caught up in a war of words with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

However, on Sunday afternoon, Rooney was on TV again for Qatar’s World Cup opening defeat against Ecuador in Al Khor. He was working for Indian TV network JioCinema.

The current DC United manager was asked who he’d start, bench and drop from a star-studded line-up. It was a question to set him up for viral content.

Rooney said: “I’d have to start Messi, bench Kane and leave Ronaldo out.”

The presenter commented: “Somebody isn’t getting a Christmas card this year,” before Rooney added: “He’s not playing for his club, so…”

  1. Agree with Wayne. Messi has desire. And has to perform.
Kane has if he is gifted a tap in will take it.
Ronaldo. His brain is in gear but his body is in neutral.
