Julien Laurens gives positive injury update on Raphael Varane ahead of World Cup

It was reported earlier that Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema were both training separately as they followed their recovery protocol.

Those reports were published just last night from L’Equipe and it was suggested that Benzema had more complications than Varane ahead of France’s World Cup opener against Australia on Tuesday.

We feared that this was a hint Didier Deschamps would start Varane in their first game of the tournament, potentially risking a rushed return for a game the reigning champions should be winning with or without the Manchester United centre-back.

However, it looks like that fear could become reality but – like any United fan this winter – I will be watching France from the edge of my seat, especially whenever Varane goes to ground. Call it squeaky-bum time if you like.

Reliable French journalist Julien Laurens has an update from last night’s report. He claims Varane and Benzema are back training with Deschamp’s squad. He says it’s “great news” ahead of the match against Australia.

Let us know your thoughts about Deschamps risking Varane so early on in the World Cup? I don’t mean to underestimate Australia, especially in what everyone considers to be an open tournament, but let’s not kid ourselves here. I’m well aware there will be lots of egg on my face of the French come up short.
