Erik ten Hag gives verdict on Tyrell Malacia at right-back

Erik ten Hag has given his verdict on how Tyrell Malacia fairs in the right-back position, as opposed to his preferred role on the left.

Diogo Dalot’s suspension meant another player had to play at right-back for the first time all season when Manchester United faced Fulham on Sunday. The Portugal international has been irreplaceable so far after his impressive form and development under Ten Hag.

The Dutch manager entirely overlooked the player next in line for the position, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and instead opted to utilise Malacia.

Supporters felt as though the 23-year-old struggled with the unfamiliarity and, consequently, Fulham began to target his side after sensing Malacia’s difficulties with adjusting.

Ten Hag was happy with what he saw, though, as he told AD: “(He) did a great job – I had already seen at training that he can do that just as well as left back. He can also play well on the right.

“Of course, there are points if you are left-legged and play on that flank it is more difficult, but he has found the balance well.”

No room for Wan-Bissaka – exit on the cards

One thing the tactical change did confirm was Ten Hag’s opinion on Wan-Bissaka, who has played just four minutes on the pitch this season. If the manager would rather deploy a player out of position than start the Englishman, his days as a United player are numbered.
