Three things we learned as Manchester United beat Fulham in stoppage time

Manchester United ended the first half of the Premier League season on a high as Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score the winner in the last minute of injury time.

Christian Eriksen opened the scoring with a tap-in at the back post, but Fulham fought back with Daniel James finding the net against his former club.

It looked like we would be held to a draw until Garnacho squeezed the ball past Bernd Leno to claim all three points.

Here are three things we learned against Fulham…

Manchester United had a presence up front but must do better

Anthony Martial played well on his return from injury, although his finishing was rusty. He got into good goalscoring positions in the first-half and it always looked like Martial or Marcus Rashford would get in behind. That isn’t always the case when Cristiano Ronaldo is on the pitch.

Maguire overlooked again

Tyrell Malacia regrettably started at right with Diogo Dalot suspended, but there was no place for Harry Maguire as Erik ten Hag went with Victor Lindelof to partner Lisandro Martinez. I think it’s very clear who United will be trying to sell next summer.

3 points behind Tottenham with a game in-hand

Today’s win means we remain fifth in the Premier League before the World Cup, but we are just three points off Spurs in fourth and four points behind Newcastle in third — with a game in-hand over both teams. This marks a decent first half to the season and gives us something to build on when everyone returns from the World Cup. Ten Hag is doing an excellent job and his late substitute had a big impact against Fulham.
