Ten Hag explains why Malacia is playing at right-back vs Fulham

Kick-off between Manchester United and Fulham at Craven Cottage is just minutes away as Erik ten Hag eyes a return to winning ways in the Premier League.

The Dutchman saw his side’s nine-game unbeaten run come to an end last weekend as they fell to an inspired Aston Villa side at Villa Park.

United bounced back against the same opposition in the Carabao Cup just days later and now, they face newly-promoted Fulham in their final game before the season is broken by the World Cup.

Right-back Diogo Dalot received his fifth yellow card of the season in that game at Villa Park last season and is therefore suspended for this game, meaning that Ten Hag had a decision to make going into the 90-minute affair.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was ahead of Dalot in the pecking order for a long time, has made just one appearance this season and was not given the nod this time either.

Instead, left-back Tyrell Malacia has been chosen to deputise at right-back in Dalot’s absence. Speaking ahead of the game, Ten Hag has explained why.

“Oh yeah, we did it several times in training, and in some games where Tyrell replaced [Diogo Dalot] and did quite well,” Ten Hag is quoted as saying by the official Manchester United website.

“Also I think tactics will be good. We are expecting a player like Willian, he can be good in the pockets he can be good outside and we have to deal with that.”

SN’s verdict…
Dalot is the only outfield player to have started all competitive games for United this season and that run has now come to an end. Instead, he will be watching from home before linking up with the Portugal national team next week.

Malacia has appeared at right-back in substitute appearances but this will be his first start in that position and it will be fascinating to see how he does.

It’s no secret that United are interested in a right-back, with reports earlier this week claiming that the Old Trafford club will try to sign one if Wan-Bissaka can be sold.
