Manchester United had been linked with a summer move for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, although reports suggest they could move for him again in the future.
Erik ten Hag eventually decided to focus his efforts on Antony instead. A player he previously worked with Ajax and it was clear to see that United needed something special on the right flank.
Antony has been a sensation at Old Trafford so far, but that doesn’t mean United won’t go back in for Gakpo, who is having an incredible season for PSV having contributed to 30 goals in 23 games.
His latest comments make for interesting reading because he doesn’t hide away from the fact he wants to join a bigger club. Gakpo also names Manchester United as one of the clubs he would like to join.
“I think at the end of this season I will be ready to take that next step,” Gakpo told Dutch outlet NOS. “I feel like I was already that way at the start of the season, but after this season I’m even more ready to take that next step.”
When asked which clubs he would like to join, he replied: “Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team would suit me best.”
We will get to see him star for the Netherlands at the World Cup this month, with PSV Eindhoven hoping that he can add to his already increasing value in the transfer market.
Ten Hag would ‘love’ Gakpo at Manchester United
Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Peter O’Rourke stressed that Ten Hag would ‘love’ to sign the Netherlands forward next summer: “I’m sure Erik ten Hag would love to add him to his squad in January because he has been quite vocal in saying that he needs more attacking players at Manchester United.
“He needs more goals as well, and that’s something that Cody Gakpo would definitely add to this Man United team. Looking at his record for PSV this season, he scores goals and assists goals as well, so he’s a player that would definitely tick the boxes for Ten Hag.”
