Erik ten Hag will release Fred once his contract expires at Manchester United in June 2023.
The Brazilian has failed to make a statement in the United squad despite being a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is set to depart the club on a free in the summer, according to The Guardian.
Fred was cemented in the starting lineup over the past two seasons largely due to the club’s failure to sign another midfielder.
Since the arrival of Casemiro and his partnership with Christian Eriksen, the two have become Ten Hag’s preferred pairing in the holding midfield roles.
Fred vs McTominay who stays?
Scott McTominay comes next in the pecking order who is able to offer more than Fred due to his abilities in both attack and defence. McTominay has netted some impressive strikes in a United shirt and even got his name on the scoresheet last night when the Reds oversaw a 4-2 win at Old Trafford against Aston Villa.
Defensively, the Scotsman has a clear height advantage over Fred, meaning he can be an imposing figure aerially. He is also a stronger, more dominant figure, who is able to outmuscle opponents and win challenges.
Despite this, Fred had built a bond with fans due to his constant efforts on the pitch – he would run the entire 90 minutes and never tire. This season he has looked decent when called upon but, evidently, does not fit in Ten Hag’s plans.
