Manchester United issued an instant response to going behind early in the second half.
An Ollie Watkins goal gave Aston Villa the lead after some shoddy defending following on from a poor loss of possession from Fred in midfield.
For United’s goal, which came seconds later, Fernandes runs onto a ball sent over the top from the back. He does well to stay onside before squaring the ball to Anthony Martial. The Frenchman scored 19 seconds after Villa’s opener.

The goal makes for an interesting second half after a dull opening 45 minutes. It was also the sort of response the manager would have demanded from his players if they want to progress into the next round.
Erik ten Hag will want to avoid a penalty shootout.
