Marcus Rashford has made it clear where he hopes to play for England at the forthcoming World Cup.

After getting on the scoresheet for the eight time this season, Rashford sent a message to England manager Gareth Southgate that he prefers to play as a wide forward.

“My aim is to get back to enjoying my football at the moment and scoring goals, so I can’t complain,” Rashford said, as per The Express.

“If you watch me play, when I’m on the left I make runs into that position [centre forward] so I try and end up near the goal, that’s where the goals are scored so that’s where I want to be. The more often I do, the more goals I’ll score.

“I’d probably say I’m more comfortable on the wing. A lot of the games with my back to goal, I need to improve on that and I think I’m alright at bringing others into the game. But when I have to hold it, that’s something I need to work on.”

The Manchester United forward was recalled by Southgate for the England squad and will be going to Qatar for the start of the tournament next week.

Rashford, 25, was rewarded for his performance by getting the man of the match award and it was a fantastic way to cap a memorable day. He also took his goal like a true finisher and refused to go down after being knocked by Tyrone Mings.

He has often played from the left hand side as it allows him to cut in on his right foot, which would have been the case this season had Anthony Martial been fit to lead the line himself. We could see the difference the Frenchman made tonight, especially when United pressed Villa’s defence.

It remains to be seen if Rashford will be starting games for England this winter. I just hope he comes back without any injuries or niggles.
