Wayne Rooney strikes bond with Ten Hag after visiting Carrington

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney striker has struck up a bond with Erik ten Hag, according to reports.

The Sun claims Rooney has been a frequent visitor at Carrington in recent weeks to watch sons Kai and Klay train with the academy. As a result, he’s rubbed shoulders with Ten Hag and his coaching staff.

A source told the newspaper: “Wayne has met Eric and really likes him. He sees some of Sir Alex in the new manager. He’s very single-minded, focused and determined and has a vision for where he wants to take the club.

“They both picked each other’s brains and Wayne, naturally, is keen to have the chance to soak up as much knowledge from more experienced managers. Erik was more than happy to share some advice and support.

“Wayne is still learning his craft but one day he’d love to be in Eric’s position and manage United. That would be his dream job and he will work flat out to get there.”

I quite like how the new manager is open to having club legends – like Rooney – in and around Carrington for discussions, even if it’s to give him managerial advice. He could find himself in the running for the biggest job in football if his develops into an elite coach.

As we know from other players, though, being a top footballer doesn’t necessarily mean you will become a top manager.

Rooney, who currently manages MLS outfit DC United, returned to his family in the UK following the end to his club’s league campaign.

After playing for the club towards the end of his career, Rooney was appointed DC United manager in July but they still suffered an extremely disappointing campaign as they finished bottom of the MLS’ Eastern Conference.

The former England international is expected to return to Washington for pre-season training in January.
