Luke Shaw is set to ask Manchester United for a five-year extension at the club as he enters the final stages of his current deal.
Shaw’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023 and Erik ten Hag has given no sign as to what he will do regarding the defender’s future.
The 27-year-old’s form has fluctuated at United, with a large part of his career at the club spent sidelined with long-term injuries. When fit, Shaw can provide a significant attacking threat for the team and is classed as a more senior member of the squad, having been in Manchester since 2014.
He has also been a key member of the England national team and scored the opening goal for the Three Lions in the Euro 2020 final against Italy last year.
It is likely he will receive a call-up to feature for the squad at the forthcoming World Cup tournament.
Two factors determine Shaw’s future
His future at the Red Devils lies on two factors; his injury record and the development of Tyrell Malacia, according to Jacque Talbot of The Times.
Malacia, who became a Red in the summer, provides a younger alternative in the left-back position who is eager to earn his place in the starting lineup and prove himself under Ten Hag.
Shaw wants a five-year deal. Hear that official talks have not begun yet – Man Utd remain concerned about his injury record. Also, the development of Tyrell Malacia could hamper starting place in the first XI under Erik ten Hag.

Shaw’s fitness also plays a key part in the potential negotiations. Given United’s hectic schedule, they cannot rely on a fullback who will only be available throughout parts of the season.
Talks have not yet begun regarding Shaw’s future.
