Manchester United target Diogo Costa signs contract extension at FC Porto

Manchester United target Diogo Costa has signed a contract extension with FC Porto that runs until 2027.

The Portuguese side have also added a release clause of around €75 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The deal comes after United had eyed Costa (via The Athletic) as a replacement for David de Gea, who is in the final year of his contract at the club.

Porto have just qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League and Costa has played a key role for his side throughout the tournament so far, having saved three penalties. He is also expected to be Portugal’s first choice between the sticks at the forthcoming World Cup.

David de Gea – stick or twist?

The Spaniard has come under fire in recent seasons for poor performances and mistakes in matches, with some errors likely costing his side the game. The majority of United supporters will admit that De Gea in previous seasons has been below par – so why should Erik ten Hag stick with him?

Because the 31-year-old brings a sense of familiarity to the club; he is one constant in an ever-changing United side. When all the outfield players have retired or departed, De Gea is one name that is on the team sheet week in, week out. He is the only remaining player to have stayed in Manchester since Sir Alex Ferguson’s managerial reign ended.

When United went through turmoil but his performances stayed world-class, he stuck with the team. Now, the club are looking promising; Ten Hag’s style of play, the new signings fitting in perfectly, results going in United’s favour has Old Trafford breathing a breath of fresh air.

De Gea has played a crucial role for United yet again this season and has picked up nine clean sheets so far – six in his last seven games. He marked his 500th appearance as a Red against Newcastle on October 16.
