Fabrizio Romano provides Marcus Rashford contract update

Ahead of this season, Marcus Rashford was experiencing the most difficult period of his career after losing his place at both Manchester United and England.

Ralf Rangnick preferred youngster Anthony Elanga over the Englishman and with Antony, the Brazil star, joining this summer, it looked like Rashford’s position could be in real danger.

Instead, Erik ten Hag has taken the 25-year-old under his wing and he has emerged as one of the most important players under the Dutchman.

Rashford’s impressive form has, however, coincided with him entering the final 12 months of his contract and the club now needs to make a decision on his future.

Now, journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Rashford’s contract situation, insisting that the club have been ‘very clear’ on what they want to do.

“Manchester United have been very clear with the player and with his agents – they want to extend his contract,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“Manchester United don’t even consider the possibility of Marcus Rashford leaving the club as a free agent in the summer. His contract is expiring in June but there is an option for Man United to extend the contract for one more season.

“Man United feel protected on this side of the story on Marcus Rashford, they are prepared to trigger the clause. But they also want to discuss, with Rashford, a long-term contract.

“Man United want Rashford to stay, at least, for one more season or for long-term. The mission is clear, conversations are ongoing to find a solution.”

Rashford has scored seven goals in all competitions so far this season and is in good form ahead of this month’s World Cup, with Gareth Southgate likely to bring him back to the England fold.

It’s not looking as good for another English winger at Old Trafford, with Jadon Sancho now unlikely to join the Three Lions on their trip to Qatar.

The 22-year-old started the season well but has now entered a poor run of form. Sancho was an unused substitute in two of the last three games and was left out of the squad against Real Sociedad earlier this week, presumably due to injury.
