Journalist dismisses report that former Liverpool sporting director is close to join Manchester United

There were suggestions this morning that Manchester United were growing in confidence about luring former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards to Old Trafford.

In the progress, Football Insider claimed that United had to fend off firm interest from Chelsea – with a gentleman’s agreement in place that would see Edwards start his role at the club next summer.

Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports clarified the matter this afternoon, on Twitter, when he noted that the Englishman is actually ‘not close to joining’ United at all.

I’m sure the editors at Football Insider will stand by their story like they should, however, I did get the feeling that the article was a little premature.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans are worrying that Edwards could end up at United – which makes it funny if the stories prove to be bogus.

Their former sporting director had a tremendous record with transfers during his time at the club and I think a number of top clubs will be chasing his services in the near future.

I would be shocked if United made any big changes to their recruitment team in the near future because John Murtough is in the process of making the role his own.
