Cristiano Ronaldo has stormed off in two matches this season – if you include the pre-season match against Rayo Vallecano.

For that reason, I don’t think people are ‘surprised’ by Ronaldo’s recent behaviour, but I could be very wrong.

I’m just getting fed up with seeing Ronaldo dominate the headlines day after day in what is proving to be a hugely challenging season for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

I understand that it must be difficult for Ronaldo be adjust to his new role – sat on the bench and waiting to see if he can have any impact on games as a substitute – but that is part of football.

He doesn’t need to stick around either. A conversation needs to be had between Ronaldo, Jorge Mendes, and the club about how everyone plans to move on from this episode. It would be best for all parties to go their separate ways, but it may be a question of whether Ronaldo is willing to stick it out at Old Trafford until January.

Ronaldo missed pre-season and his professionalism has been subject to criticism in the past week. He took to Instagram to apologise for his actions against Tottenham Hotspur, although the words ‘sorry’ were missing from the text.

Writing his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Fabrizio Romano suggested the 37-year-old’s actions surprised his teammates and staff at the club. He also noted that Ronaldo was professional when asked to train on his own as a result.

“Of course, all people at Manchester United were surprised by Cristiano’s reaction vs Tottenham but it’s important to mention that he is always been respectful and professional in training in the last three months, so the expectation is for Cristiano to return with the first squad,” Romano wrote.

Ronaldo is expected to return to training with the squad this week.
