David de Gea’s contract at Manchester United is set to expire in the summer. The club can trigger a one-year extension, however, that won’t stop speculation over his future which continues to see the goalkeeper linked with a return to La Liga.

The Telegraph claims United are considering the extension clause in De Gea’s deal, but at 31, questions are bound to be asked if the club can continue to make him the highest paid keeper in the world – at a time there are better options out there.

A report from Spain, as per Todofichajes, states Real Betis’ interest has increased in recent weeks so they could be in the running for his signature in the summer. Their current No 1 Claudio Bravo is set to leave the club at the end of the season and they will be in the market for a replacement.

Some United fans may think De Gea still has a future at United, though.

There have been questions asked of De Gea this season and whether he can change his style of goalkeeping to fit Erik ten Hag’s demands as a manager. The Dutchman wants his keeper to be able to play out from the back and to come off his line when it is necessary to do so.

In recent weeks, De Gea has improved these aspects of his game and against Tottenham he was unlucky not to have an accept after playing a wonderful pass to Marcus Rashford in the second half. There is no denying that he is an important presence at the back after spending 12 seasons at Old Trafford.

One keeper United should be monitoring closely is FC Porto’s Diogo Costa, but let us know in the comments section if you think De Gea should stay for another season.
