Manchester United have reportedly contacted Edwin van der Sar over a return to the club as director of football.
The retired Dutch goalkeeper, who won two Champions League titles as a player, is currently working as chief executive at Ajax.
Having worked alongside Erik ten Hag in Amsterdam, this sounds like a match made in heaven, and Van der Sar has already represented United as a player – winning one of his two Champions League triumphs in 2008 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
There have been rumours about Van der Sar coming to United since Ed Woodward left his role as executive vice-chairman at the end of the year.
Voetbal Primeur (cited by The Sun) claims that United contacted Van der Sar about a role last week and add that this is not the first time there has been discussions about a switch of jobs.
Could Van der Sar replace or work alongside John Murtough?
It is even suggested that the Eredivisie giants are making plans to replace Van der Sar should he decide to move to Old Trafford again. This time as an executive to work closely with Ten Hag on bringing success to United’s first team.
The first thing Van der Sar will need to get around his head is that at United he will be dealing with the Glazer family, who we all know will never see football as a priority. It will be vastly different to what he is familiar with at Ajax.
