Erik ten Hag has commented on Cristiano Ronaldo’s exasperated reaction to being substituted during Manchester United’s goalless draw with Newcastle.
Ronaldo was withdrawn in the 72nd minute for Marcus Rashford on Sunday as United chased an opening goal against Eddie Howe’s side.
The Portugal captain has fallen out of favour this season under Ten Hag and has only started two of United’s nine matches played in the Premier League; Brentford and Newcastle. He has only managed to contribute one goal so far this season after finishing as the club’s top goalscorer in 2021/2022.
"He [Ronaldo] has to convince me that he should stay on and he should score a goal."

Ten Hag is aware of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s frustrations and doesn’t see an issue with it. He told MUTV: “I think no player is happy when he [is taken] off, and especially not Ronaldo, I understand that.
“As long as it is [done] in a quite normal way, [I have] no problem with that. He is, of course, to convince me that he should stay on and score a goal. That is why he is that good.”
