David de Gea hit a landmark 500 appearances for Manchester United during Sunday’s clash with Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has played a crucial role in Manchester since arriving. He has been one constant in an ever-changing United side post-Sir Alex Ferguson and is one of only two remaining players in the first-team squad to have played under Sir Alex, the other being Cristiano Ronaldo.

De Gea has always remained the first choice between the sticks at Old Trafford and has been a reliable figure to depend on. He has stuck with United through difficult times in recent years and the club has remained confident in him through any periods of bad form or results.

The 31-year-old is confident in the team’s spirit and ability this season after acquiring some new arrivals under new coach Erik ten Hag. He told MUTV: “I think we’re playing better. We are winning some difficult games, keeping some good clean sheets as well. That’s super important for us and I feel it.

The players want it more, we are hungry and that’s a good signal, so let’s keep doing well and keep fighting together.”

Old Trafford is feeling more optimistic this season

The Reds have won eight out of their last 11 games across all competitions. In this spell, they have overturned rivals such as Arsenal and Liverpool and have looked like a more sturdy and comfortable side compared to previous seasons.

The new arrivals over the summer, like Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Christian Eriksen have played a big part, but having faith in the manager and playing the style of football he has implemented has worked wonders for United as of late.
