A boost for Manchester United.

According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Newcastle duo Alexander Isak and Jonjo Shelvey have both been ruled out of Sunday’s match at Old Trafford.

Summer signing Isak has been injured since withdrawing from the Sweden squad last month. A thigh injury was enough to keep the Swede out of the games against Fulham and Brentford, and Eddie Howe will have to wait longer before he can return to the pitch.

Meanwhile, Shelvey has yet to kick a ball this season. The former Liverpool midfielder suffered a hamstring injury during Newcastle’s defeat at Benfica during pre-season and he is hoping to return to action by the end of the month.

Manchester United have some injuries of their own.

Anthony Martial missed Thursday night’s win over Omonia and will be touch-and-go until the weekend. His compatriot Raphael Varane is also recovering from a knock and Ten Hag will want to avoid long-term injuries as they are both key players in his plans for this season.

An interesting stat to keep in mind ahead of the game: United are undefeated in 34 of their last 38 matches against Newcastle, in all competitions.
