Harry Maguire looks set to make the England squad for this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

That is according to The Mirror, who claim that Gareth Southgate has reassured Maguire that he will have a key role for the Three Lions this weekend, despite losing his place in the Manchester United line-up.

This shouldn’t come as a big surprise after Southgate selected Maguire for his last squad – playing him in England’s final two Nations League matches – with the United skipper being one of his most trusted players.

Southgate clearly doesn’t agree with all the criticism Maguire receives and to analyse this fairly, you need to look at the centre-back’s performances at international level. He had a night to forget against Germany in the Nations League, but Maguire is rarely a let down for England.

Maguire is currently out of action due to an injury he picked up during the previous international break.

Southgate will pick his England squad on November 10.

Manchester United are better without Harry Maguire

This has been no secret this season.

The addition of Lisandro Martinez has worked wonders at the back, and it finally looks like we have a formidable partnership between the Argentine and Raphael Varane.

Unlike Maguire, the pair look assured and haven’t had many mistakes lead to goals for the opposition. Some of the changes made after the Brentford game stuck and I am not one bit surprised.

The former Leicester City centre-back needs to think about his future and maybe look to Luke Shaw because the left-back is fighting hard to win his place back from Tyrell Malacia.
