Manchester United among Premier League clubs scouting 18 y/o Rangers defender

Manchester United are among a list of Premier League clubs interested in Rangers defender Leon King.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old defender, just like Leeds and Newcastle.

The Italian journalist tweeted: “Many clubs are monitoring Rangers centre back Leon King (2004) who started against Liverpool at Anfield, last week – he’s out of contract in June 2024. Manchester United, Newcastle and Leeds have already sent their scouts to follow King.”

The three Premier League clubs are monitoring the youngster’s development at Ibrox, but only time will tell if he can become a genuine transfer target.

Romano claims King’s contract situation is open with his current deal set to expire in 2024.

King’s performance against Liverpool in the Champions League demonstrated a player who can play at the highest level. That said, defending against this level side is not the same task it was 12 months ago.

It’s still early days in King’s career and Rangers could argue that he should spend another year or two at Ibrox before leaving for a bigger club.

United will be in the market for a new centre-back in the summer because Raphael Varane is unreliable in terms of fitness, and I don’t think Erik ten Hag has enough confidence in Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof.

King is certainly a player we will keep an eye on this season.
