Manchester United target Cody Gakpo is rumoured to favour a move to Real Madrid amid interest from Premier League sides.
That is according to The Athletic and it’s a strong suggestion that Gakpo’s raised expectations will see him get a bigger move than Leeds United after coming close to joining the Yorkshire club on deadline day.
Gakpo was linked to United throughout the summer transfer window and was open to the move to Manchester, however, Erik ten Hag and his team prioritised the transfer of Antony from Ajax. The Brazilian cost the club £86 million and consequently ended their pursuit of Gakpo as Antony concluded United’s summer signings.
Leeds United then came close to overseeing a deal for the Dutch striker before the potential transfer collapsed on deadline day, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The 23-year-old would have been an exciting addition to the United squad. He has the potential to change games with his prolific goal-scoring ability and is experienced enough to start games – especially when United are plagued with injury concerns.
Ten Hag looked set to utilise Anthony Martial as United’s main forward option this season, but the Frenchman has only spent 104 minutes on the pitch so far due to ongoing injury concerns.
Cristiano Ronaldo has fallen out of favour under Ten Hag this season and whilst a five-time Ballon d’Or winner is an excellent option to have on the bench or through injuries, it’s unreasonable to rely on a 37-year-old to provide goals throughout the season, especially when considering the numerous competitions United will play in.
Manchester United should make a January move for Cody Gakpo:
Despite the striker seemingly preferring the enticing option of playing for the reigning European champions, the Red Devils should try their luck in January to bring Gakpo to Manchester.
Across the 2022/2023 campaign, the Netherlands international has scored 13 goals and registered 10 assists in only 16 games. He shares the same agents as Ten Hag and is currently managed by United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, which may help swing the young prospect in the Reds’ favour when it comes to his decision.
