David de Gea has made it no secret that he wants to sign a new contract at Manchester United with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
The Spanish goalkeeper joined Manchester United in 2011 from Atletico Madrid. He won the club’s last Premier League title in 2013 and collected the club’s Player of the Year award on four separate occasions.
However, it remains to be seen if De Gea will be United’s long-term goalkeeper under new manager Erik ten Hag, who is looking to implement a more possession-based style of play at Old Trafford.
It has been suggested that Ten Hag could look to another keeper in the transfer market – one with the ability to play out from the back as well as willingness to come off his line. De Gea has come under fire in recent seasons for lacking in these areas, but he was very good last night against Everton at Goodison Park.
In a post-match interview, De Gea stressed that he has no plans to leave United and expressed his desire to agree new terms with the club.
“We controlled the game until the last 10 minutes,” De Gea told BT Sport, as quoted by The Metro.
“It was massive for our confidence, we have to look forward to the next games. It’s an honour to be here, it’s a privilege.
“It was great to be in goal today, with the team fighting for three points. I’m just very focused on the games helping the team as much as I can.
“Of course, I would like to be here for more years, so let’s see what happens in the future. I’m really, really happy here.”
United have been linked with a number of potential replacements in recent weeks such as Jan Oblak, Jordan Pickford and Diogo Costa.
Stretty News verdict – Full adaptation unlikely for De Gea
As much as I admire De Gea, I don’t think he will ever be a goalkeeper that brings confidence to the team when playing out from the back. That’s why I think United should look to address that in the summer.
Another point I would make is that you can’t keep the highest paid keeper in the world on the bench, so something will need to change – whether it’s De Gea accepting a lower deal, or he leaves after 11 years of service.

Keep De Gea and stop playing the ball around at the back. The defence are good enough to do that and they just terrify the fans when the ball is played back to them.
Move the ball forward and stop kicking it back every time we get in the oppositions half. We look so disjointed. Makes you wonder if we train together or as individuals.
Certainly not a convincing win yesterday, very lucky.
