Luke Shaw’s contract at Manchester United is set to expire in 2023 and he currently finds himself sitting on the fringe of the team.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle could move for the England left-back in January to tempt Manchester United with an offer should they decide against triggering a 12-month extension in Shaw’s deal.

New signing Tyrell Malacia has been starting games at left-back this season, although Shaw has replaced him at half-time in the last two games. That could put him in the frame to start Sunday’s game away to Everton in the Premier League.

The report in question states that the Magpies are aware of Shaw’s situation and are set to look closer at doing a deal in January.

It should go without saying that he would be a significant upgrade on Matt Targett and Dan Burn, but we know that Newcastle will be linked with every Tom, Dick and Harry over the coming years.

Shaw has made 218 appearances for United since signing from Southampton in 2014.
