Paul Merson tips Marcus Rashford for World Cup call

Paul Merson has been casting his opinions on the latest England squad and who should be on the plane to Qatar for the World Cup later this year.

There’s some good news and bad news for United players granted they care about what Merson has to say about their chances in his latest Sky Sports column.

First up is Luke Shaw, who Merson doesn’t think will make it to the World Cup because he doesn’t see him playing football regularly at United. Not with Tyrell Malacia standing in his way at left-back. The pundit adds that England are blessed in the full-back department and won’t need to call upon Shaw for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Merson thinks Marcus Rashford should be going to Qatar, but not Jadon Sancho. He thinks the former would have made the squad this time around if it wasn’t for the muscle injury he sustained against Arsenal.

“I think Marcus Rashford should feel hard done by. If he wasn’t injured, I think he would have got into this squad and I think he’ll get into the final 26-man World Cup squad if he keeps doing what he’s doing.”

Merson goes on to be very harsh in his criticism of Sancho, writing: “People talk to me about Jadon Sancho, but he’s scored two Premier League goals and got no assists. He’s not ripping it up, and while he scored a good goal against Liverpool he’s in a queue of a lot of players in that position.”

Personally, I couldn’t care less when it comes to England or international football in general. I would be a lot happier if our players only had United to focus on and not a World Cup that will interrupt the Premier League campaign.
