Erik ten Hag gives injury update on Marcus Rashford and backs forward for World Cup call

Erik ten Hag has backed Marcus Rashford to make England’s World Cup squad despite injury forcing him out of the upcoming internationals.

The Nations League fixtures could have been seen as an opportunity for Rashford to prove himself in an England shirt before the World Cup, after losing his place in the squad since Euro 2020.

Rashford sustained a muscle injury after scoring a brace in United’s 3-1 win against Arsenal and he missed the Europa League opener against Real Sociedad as a result.

Thankfully, Erik ten Hag doesn’t sound worried about the injury and believes it won’t be long before he returns, though United are not in action again for another month after tomorrow night’s game against FC Sheriff in the Europa League.

The manager did confirm that Rashford would not be available for the game, telling reporters (via Manchester Evening News): “He’s not available, a consequence after Arsenal. He has a muscle injury.

“I don’t think too long, but I don’t know. It’s not really bad, we expect him quite soon to be back in the team.”

Ten Hag believes it is “obvious” that Rashford should still go to the World Cup as part of Gareth Southgate’s squad.

He added: “That’s quite obvious and quite clear, yes [he should go to the World Cup]. He played really good seasons and I think in this season he had a great comeback and showed his great potential and quality.”
