Antony hails Man United teammate as ‘best in the world’

Antony has enjoyed a sparkling start to life in Manchester after he scored the opening goal against Arsenal on his debut last week, with United going on to win the game to extend their winning streak to four games.

Antony was the subject of a frustrating transfer saga over the summer and the Brazil international refused to train with Ajax, such was his determination to reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

He is rapidly growing into a fan-favourite at Old Trafford and it appears he is also settling in quickly with the rest of the squad. Speaking to the official Manchester United website, he has hailed teammate Cristiano Ronaldo as the ‘best in the world’.

“I’ve come to help my team-mates,” United’s new no21 said. “Regardless of age, there’s immense talent in all the players.

“Words can’t describe Cristiano, the best in the world. In just a few days, I’ve learnt a lot from him. He has an extraordinary mind and, whenever I talk to him, I take a lot from it. I’m sure that we have a strong attack and it’s very promising for the future.”

The 22-year-old also commented on his signature playing style – a classic Brazilian flair with an appetite to involve the crowd.

“I’ve always done this,” Antony said. “Not just here but for all the teams I’ve played for. I’ve been doing it ever since I was a child. I’ve always done it – it’s one of my characteristics.

“I am adapting and getting used to things here already. Entertaining is something I’ve always liked and I’ll continue doing it.”

SN’s verdict…
There are a few parallels to be drawn between Ronaldo’s start to life in Manchester and Antony’s. Clearly, Antony has a long way to go before he’s the finished product but who better to learn from?

Patience will be needed with Antony but the early signs are promising and United will be hoping that under Ten Hag, a coach he already knows well, he will adapt quickly to his new life.

United have been lacking a left-footed winger on the right-hand side for quite some time and Ten Hag was desperate to sign Antony – it’s now up to the player to deliver.
