Manchester United duo make Premier League team of the week

Manchester United’s game against Southampton was a tough affair but we got over the line thanks to a Bruno Fernandes volley in the second half.

Writing for BBC Sport, Garth Crooks selected his Premier League team of the week and included two United players: Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez.

Crooks commended Martinez and said he was fully deserving of praise, writing: “Martinez makes my selection for the second time in a week after a performance against Southampton that was totally authoritative.

“The Argentine centre-back seemed to take total responsibility against the Saints, allowing the rest of the back four to get on with their jobs.”

He added: “Raphael Varane was good but Martinez was better. I have no idea where that leaves Harry Maguire.”

It is the second week running that Martinez has been selected, following on from two man of the match displays, after being harshly criticised by pundits for being too small to play at centre-back in the Premier League. The Argentine was a rock at the back and won everything against Che Adams.

Fernandes was also deserving of his place in the Premier League team of the week for his winning goal and overall performance.

On Fernandes, Crooks added: “The Portugal international was perfectly entitled to express his delight in front of the cameras after securing all three points at Southampton via one of his classic finishes.”

It would be a huge benefit to United if these players can continue this form into the upcoming games against Leicester City and Arsenal. The Reds need to keep winning to turn things around in the league.
