Why did Manchester United need Casemiro so badly?

IT’S OFFICIAL – Casemiro is now a Manchester United player!

After fans who purchased Manchester United tickets showed their resentment over a disappointing summer transfer window, the club finally acted in the transfer market by signing a world class midfielder in Casemiro.

“Excited to move to Manchester United” is what the 30-year-old midfielder added as he bid farewell to the Santiago Bernabeu. In an emotional press conference before his departure, the Brazilian broke down in tears and thanked the team for his success with them.

At Real Madrid, Casemiro won three La-Liga titles and 3 Club World Cups and was the winner of the UEFA Champions League on five occasions. The concluded season was one of the best seasons for the club and Casemiro. The side won their 35th La Liga title with a massive margin and later defeated Liverpool to win the UEFA Champions League.

So how does Casemiro help Manchester United? Is he their saviour? We find out.

Casemiro – Player Overview

At 30-years-old, Casemiro is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and has won everything available to win at Real Madrid after moving there from Sao Paulo in 2013.

With 500+ appearances, the Brazilain has lifted the Copa Sudamericana (2012) with Sao Paulo and more with Madrid.

The three league titles in 2017, 2020 and 20222 will be special for Casemiro, along with the three Spanish Super Cup wins in 2017, 2022, and 2022.

But the UEFA Champions League wins was Casemiro’s pinnacle – the club and he didn’t just win it once, but on five different occasions (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022);

He also won three FIFA Club World Cups (2016, 2017, 2018).

He has also scored 47goals during these 500 career appearances.

For Brazil, he has made 63 appearances and has won a Copa America in 2019, the South American U-17 Championship (2009) and the South American U-20 Championship (2011) and FIFA U-20 World Cup (2011) at the youth level.

He is expected to play another pivotal role in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar as Brazil look back to get their winning mojo back in the yellow jersey.

As a defensive midfielder, Casemiro sits far in as the central pivot in front of the centre backs when it comes to a 4-3-3 setup. He can get forward in a more box-to-box mode when it comes to attacking.

But the real strength comes with his defence. The Brazilian excels at covering his teammates when out of position and can adapt easily to stop attacks.

He has always had comparisons to Real Madrid’s legendary midfielder Claude Makelele but Casemiro has grown from this comparison to building his own identity at the Bernabeu.

Casemiro’s exit would mean that the legendary Real Madrid midfield would call it a day. The Casemiro-Toni Kroos-Luka Modric midfield was one of the combinations in all of football history.

What worked for them was that the trio complimented each other, helping them do their job. The Brazilian was more focused on defences and winning back ball, so the other two could push for an opportunity.

Only five players, including Barca’s Sergio Busquets, had more ball recoveries (230) in the La Liga. Casemiro’s awareness is exceptional, and he can often be seen dropping back into defence to plug spaces or help out an out-of-position teammate.

With a pass completion rate of 86% in the La Liga last season, he tops the charts alongside his midfield counterpart Kroos. When it comes to goalscoring, you will see him scoring the long-range ones. His best tally was in the 2020-21 season, where he netted the ball on six occasions.

His most memorable will be the 2017 Champions League final against Juventus.

Why did Manchester want him?

With options running, United wanted to make things right during the transfer window before the September 1st deadline.

With Casemiro, they essential fix a void inside the United squad under Erik ten Hag. United haven’t kept their approach on Frenkie de Jong a secret, but with the player opting not to play for United, they had to look for other options.

Casemiro, at the time, fitted in perfectly. He might be 30, but he is vastly experienced and is probably the world’s best in his position.

The Red Devils couldn’t say no.

Can he fit in?

Casemiro will walk straight into the starting XI at United because he’s far better than anyone in the current starting lineup in that position.

The question is whether he could fit into the way the Dutchman wants to play.

The Brazilian’s intentions are pretty straightforward – he wants to win the ball back during any given situation and send it forward to someone with more technical ability, one thing he’s perfected over the years at Madrid. He was the midfielder that most players feared, and he eased the pressure on the Madrid defence.

For United, who are struggling in the back, Casemiro’s input will be invaluable. Casemiro isn’t bringing the passing skills that De Jong might have, but he will make United better defensively. At this point, this is something United wants desperately.

He is an expert in breaking up play and an excellent reader of the situation. The Red Devils conceded too many last season, and they already have six in the first two games this season.

Casemiro should help reduce this deficit. It might be tough for the midfielder who’s used to having the likes of Modric and Kroos alongside him, and he will now need to play a more leadership-oriented role to compliment the likes of someone such as Bruno Fernandes.

Every year, United brings in some significant news to entice the Manchester United tickets. Last year it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing, and this year, his teammate, Casemiro. While the side lost their opening games, there’s still faith with fans to purchase Manchester United tickets.

While it can be challenging on the official sources, trusted reseller platforms will provide every fan with the opportunity to purchase Manchester United tickets with ease.
