Paul Merson slams Jadon Sancho after slow start to 2022/23 season

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has slammed Manchester United winger, Jadon Sancho, after some questionable performances in a Red shirt.

Sancho was one of the brightest United players while on pre-season, but it has been a slow start to the season for the England international.

The player’s performance levels have dropped since his switch from Bundesliga, although we must stress that last season was a complete write off, and it’s difficult to pin that on any one player. Especially a 22-year-old.

Paul Merson said that despite his age, 54, he could do better than Sancho if given the opportunity to return to the pitch.

“I can do what Sancho is doing at the moment and I’m 54,” Merson told the Daily Star. “When was the last time you saw him beat a player?

“He doesn’t run with the ball, he takes a few touches inside and lays it backward.

“These players are getting paid top, top dollar. They are supposed to be elite and the people upstairs are also getting paid fortunes to find them.”

SN’s verdict

Sancho needs more time. We are in the process of learning a totally different style of football and I suspect it will suit Sancho when everything comes together.

I wouldn’t fancy Merson to run more than Marcus Rashford at his age, and that is saying something because the England star ran less than 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo last week against Brentford.

Give Sancho the benefit of doubt and don’t listen to Merson.
