Erik ten Hag’s search for a deep-lying midfielder is still ongoing despite the transfer window reaching its final two weeks.

Manchester United have spent all of this summer trying to convince Frenkie de Jong to join the club but thus far, their attempts have been unsuccessful and he is likelier to join Chelsea, who can offer Champions League football.

Alternatives to De Jong have, however, been identified and Adrien Rabiot is closing in on a move to Old Trafford – becoming Ten Hag’s fourth signing of the summer.

Now, another midfielder is being linked with a transfer. According to Spanish outlet Marca, United have set their sights on Real Madrid star Casemiro.

The 30-year-old, who has starred in four Champions League-winning sides, has three years remaining on his contract at the Spanish giants but is now of interest to the Reds to fill a gaping hole.

As per the report, a deal is far from advanced. Real Madrid are still depending on the Brazil international and they are yet to receive any offers.

Furthermore, it’s claimed that although United are prioritising strikers at this point, they are considering a move for Casemiro and a surprise in the final two weeks of the transfer window can’t be ruled out.

SN’s verdict…
We’ve reached a point in the transfer window where every popular defensive midfielder is being linked with a move to United. In truth, it’s embarrassing for the club to let it reach this.

United’s indecisiveness in the market have cost them dearly already this season and although Casemiro has been a reliable player for Real Madrid, any supposed interest in him points to a frantic strategy. Casemiro is nothing like De Jong in terms of style and profile.

For many supporters, any player is better than no players and considering the lack of options at Ten Hag’s disposal – we’ll have to agree.
