Gary Neville warns Man Utd could finish in the bottom half amid Cristiano Ronaldo uncertainty

Manchester United are at the foot of the Premier League after two rounds of games, scoring just one goal and conceding six as Erik ten Hag unpacks a chaotic start to life at the club.

It’s been a catastrophic first couple of weeks for Ten Hag and Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is also up in the air, with the 37-year-old still keen to leave after asking to depart last month.

Earlier on Tuesday, it emerged that United were warming to the idea of letting Ronaldo leave the club due to concerns over his impact on squad morale.

Now, former United captain and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has admitted that if they do not get this ordeal right, the Reds run the risk of finishing in the bottom half of the table.

“The problem is now, I think if they lose him (Ronaldo), then there’s nothing left in terms of the actual goalscoring part of the pitch,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“And I genuinely think, if they don’t bring players in these next couple of weeks or if they bring poor players in, and he leaves, I genuinely think they could finish in the bottom half of the table.

“I think that’s a bottom half of the table team. That’s a massive statement here tonight, it might look stupid at the end of the season.”

SN’s verdict…
Make no mistake about it – the current rot at United needs to be stopped and unless Ten Hag does just that, they definitely run the risk of a record-low Premier League finish.

Last season, United accumulated fewer points than they ever have in the Premier League era but were spared a Europa League finish due to the lack of quality around them in the table.

As things stand, United are heading for a disastrous campaign and Ten Hag has a huge job on his hands. Sorting out Ronaldo’s future could have a direct impact on that.
