Manchester United withdraw offer for De Jong

Manchester United have chased Frenkie de Jong all summer but he remains at Barcelona.

Erik ten Hag listed his former Ajax midfielder as Manchester United’s main transfer target, but there has been a huge delay since terms were agreed with Barcelona.

However, Dutch football podcast Kick-off from De Telegraaf claims that the offer made to Barcelona has expired.

De Telegraaf reporter Marcel van der Kraan has since told Sky Sports that the deadline for United’s previous offer for the midfielder has now passed, with the club withdrawing it from the table.

And with United’s poor start to the Premier League season, losing 2-1 to Brighton and 4-0 to Brentford, it looks like Ten Hag will be left even more disappointed by the club’s recruitment team.

To make matters worse, Sky Sports report Chelsea are ready to sign De Jong if he leaves Barcelona before transfer deadline day.

This comes as another blow in a turbulent week for United as nothing seems to be going our way. We can’t forget that most – if not all – of the issues we are seeing stem from having the Glazer family as owners.

The club is rotting due to the American family.

SN’s verdict

It seems weird that such an agreement would have an expiry date before the deadline.

Maybe – just maybe – United are pulling away from a deal for De Jong because they feel he is unlikely to join this summer.

Just a guess. Like I said, maybe…

  1. First job for ETH was get rid of players who seemed not to want to be there. Then waste nearly the entire transfer-window trying to sign someone else who doesn’t want to be there. I don’t get it.

    1. Can’t change everything in one transfer window.
Give EtH time. I believe he can build the youth players which may take a couple seasons meanwhile accepting mid-table finishes.
