The opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo was turned down by Serie A giants Inter Milan and AC Milan this summer.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes contacted the two Milan-based clubs at the end of June and start of July.
It sounds like it was a blatant attempt by Mendes to sound out any interest in his client, who thought he could get a move away from United and walk straight into a Champions League side.
However, at 37, I think Ronaldo is quickly learning that it isn’t that straightforward.
Mendes is asking these clubs to make a mammoth investment in a player who is approaching the end of his career.
It is claimed Ronaldo was happy to join either side due to their history, their participation in the Champions League and the idea of living in Milan appealed to him.
Both clubs rejected the prospect of signing Ronaldo because they were not interested in entertaining his wage demands.
Ronaldo may love the idea of living in Milan, but it would come at a crippling cost for both clubs.
